Whisk Perfect Iced Matcha Latte at Home
There is something beautifully therapeutic about preparing a traditional bowl of matcha. But when you take that vibrant, frothy green tea and pour it over cold milk and ice? It becomes the ultimate morning ritual—bright, clean, and deeply refreshing.
Unlike coffee, which can bring a sudden spike and crash, matcha offers a sustained, calm alertness thanks to the natural combination of caffeine and L-theanine. Because you consume the entire stone-ground tea leaf rather than just an infusion, every sip is packed with antioxidants and a smooth, earthy, and slightly sweet umami profile.
Today, we’re sharing our exact studio recipe to help you master the perfect layered Iced Matcha Latte at home using a traditional Chasen (bamboo whisk) for that flawless, cafe-quality microfoam.
What You’ll Need
Ingredients:
- 4g High-Quality Matcha Powder
- 55g Water (heated to 180°F / 82°C)
- 285g Milk of your choice (Oat milk or whole milk pair wonderfully with matcha’s umami notes!)
- Ice
Tools:
- Chasen (Traditional bamboo whisk)
- Chashaku (Bamboo tea scoop, or a standard spoon)
- Sifter
- Your favorite drinking cup
- Optional: A separate vessel to whisk in (we highly recommend a spouted chawan, or matcha bowl, for a seamless pour)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1.Sift the Matcha:Prep time.
Gather all your tools and ingredients. Place your sifter over your whisking vessel and use your Chashaku to dose in 4g of matcha powder. Sift it thoroughly to break up any fine clumps. This guarantees a silky, lump-free texture.
2.Add Your Water:Temperature control.
Pour 55g of 180°F water directly over the sifted matcha.
Pro-tip: Water temperature matters! If you don’t have a temperature-controlled kettle, bring your water to a boil and let it sit for a few minutes to cool down. Or, pour the boiling water between vessels 2 to 3 times—each transfer naturally drops the temperature by about 10°F, protecting the delicate green tea from burning.
3.Whisk into a Microfoam:~1 minute.
Take your Chasen (bamboo whisk) and whisk the matcha and water vigorously in a ‘W’ or ‘M’ motion. Keep going for about 1 minute until all clumps are entirely removed and a beautiful, vibrant green microfoam forms on the surface.
4.Prepare the Milk:The base.
Fill your favorite drinking cup with a generous handful of fresh ice, then pour in 285g of your preferred milk.
5.Pour and Layer:The grand finale.
Slowly pour your freshly whisked, frothy matcha concentrate directly over the milk. Watch as the brilliant emerald green cascades into the white milk, creating a gorgeous layered gradient.
To Serve: Give the glass a gentle swirl or stir to marry the flavors right before your first sip. Serve and enjoy!
By taking the time to sift and properly whisk your matcha, you honor the traditional process while unlocking the smooth texture and rich flavor that makes a premium latte so special.
